Osama bin Laden is dead and his body has been recovered by U.S. authorities, U.S. officials said on Sunday night.The U.S. President Barack Obama made an announcement shortly that after searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead.The Afghan officials have confirmed that Bin Laden had died and his body was with the United States, said Qais Azimy, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Kabul.
The officials did not make any confirmations whether he had been killed in Pakistan or in Afghanistan, and said that the death of the al-Qaeda leader was more of a “symbolic victory”, as he was no longer directly connected to the group’s field operations, Azimy reported.It is one of a major accomplishment for Obama’s administration and to his national security team, fulfilling the goal that once voiced by former US President George W. Bush to bring to justice the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The effort of the US armed forces in hunting the Saudi terror kingpin redoubled for years following the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon which killed 3,000 people in 2001.
It was most often thought to be hiding out in Pakistan and Afghanistan border areas since Bin Laden always managed to evade US armed forces and a massive manhunt.
The death of the al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden will raise big questions about the future undertaking of the group and also have steep implications for US security and foreign policy 10 years into a global anti-terror campaign.
