CHENNAI: It will be a classic case of 'friends turning into foes' when Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash with Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the opening match of the IPL today, less than a week after the duo guided India to their historic World Cup triumph in Mumbai.Holders CSK will certainly start as the overwhelming favourites at the MA Chidambaram stadium against a team that have failed to make it to the semi-finals during the last three editions.

The KKR management led by SRK and co-owner Jay Mehta has gone for a revamped side this time with Gautam Gambhir at the helm and T-20 specialist Yusuf Pathan as one of the marquee players.

With Kolkata's favourite son Sourav Ganguly no longer a part of the team, it will be a bigger challenge for Gambhir and his boys to get past CSK who have inarguably been the most consistent team during the last three editions with one championship, one runners-up and a last four finish.

CSK came off best from the January auctions as they managed to retain a majority of their players save Muttiah Muralitharan, who will don the Kochi jersey, even as other teams indulged in a drastic shake-up.

Having retained Dhoni, Suresh Raina, local hero Murali Vijay and South African all-rounder Albie Morkel, Chennai bid successfully to retain spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Subramanium Badrinath and Australian Michael Hussey. Their batting looks formidable at least on paper despite the absence of Matthew Hayden.

For KKR, it will be a make-or-break year. They finished sixth out of eight teams in 2008 and 2010, and last in 2009 edition in South Africa. Gambhir, who hadn't exactly fired with the bat after the first edition of IPL, will like to spill the confidence of his World Cup success to IPL. Also, he would like to showcase leadership skills and justify his $2.4mn price which was the highest during the auctions.

With the likes of Brett Lee and Shakib Al Hasan set to join, the visitors appear to have far more potent ammunition in the likes of Yusuf Pathan, Brett Lee, Brad Haddin and Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan.
